Open Ballet 12 − adult

This open level class is for teens and adults who wish to study ballet and develop their technique in a friendly, non-competitive atmosphere. Great for the development of flexibility, strength, coordination, musicality and grace, with due respect given to individual body types. Especially for continuing beginners but all levels are welcome. Clothing: comfortable clothing that does not restrict mobility. Leotard, tights and ballet shoes are useful, but not required. Socks are preferred over bare feet if the student does not have ballet slippers. Long hair should be back in a ponytail or bun. Per class drop-in rate: Members: $14 Non-Members: $18

Beginning Tap 1 teen − adult

An introduction to basic tap for the complete beginner, with technique and vocabulary as our focus. Choreography will also be introduced. If you've ever dreamed of moving like Ginger Rogers or Savion Glover, or if you just want to have some noisy fun, this is the class for you! Clothing: Tap students should wear comfortable clothing: dance pants, yoga pants or other stretchy, comfortable bottoms. Ideally they should wear at least two layers on top, so they can remove a layer if they get too warm after warm ups. A t-shirt or sleeveless T and a sweatshirt is ideal. Intermediate Tap teen-adult

Continued familiarization with tap vocabulary from Vaudeville to Broadway styles. Emphasis on technique and some choreography. For students looking for a challenge in a supportive setting. Prerequisite: Beginning Tap 1 and 2 or permission of instructor. Clothing: Tap students should wear comfortable clothing: dance pants, yoga pants or other stretchy, comfortable bottoms. Intermediate Belly Dancing 13 - Adult

For dancers who have learned the basic isolations and footwork patterns of Belly Dance and wish to advance further in the art. This class will focus on combinations, layering movements, variations on the basic techniques, and musical interpretation, and will also include some work with props. Students will explore different Middle Eastern rhythm patterns and musical styles, and find which movements and combinations best express them. In addition, students and instructor will choose a piece of music and over the course of the session will work together to develop a choreography for it. Per class drop-in rate: members: $11 non-members: $15 Clothing: Students can be barefoot or wear flexible dance shoes/sandals. Beginners should preferably wear pants or tights instead of skirts; this will make it easier for the teacher to give feedback on technique. Each student should acquire a hip wrap of some kind; a simple scarf or a coin belt. The teacher will have some inexpensive coin hip scarves available for sale.

This ensemble has been featured annually in the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra’s holiday concert, “Caroling by Candlelight.” In addition, the Chorale has worked with many composers and premiered their works.

Design 1: Dynamic Composition Teen / Adult

Design is the foundation of visual arts. Students will learn that visual art is a language that can be broken down into discrete elements. These elements form the core of expression and are used together to create cohesive compositions using the Gestalt theory of design. A series of simple exercises in black and white, using a variety of media will teach students how to effectively use the core elements of art to create unified compositions. Drawing is a visual language in which the artist chooses what to emphasize about form, light, and space. In this course, students will learn to express three-dimensional form confidently and expressively. Students will draw from observation to represent objects accurately and realistically in three-dimensional space.  We will cover the essentials of western classical drawing, including principles of perception, proportion and measurement, linear and atmospheric perspective, the functions of line, learning to relate complex objects to simple geometric forms, and principles of light and shade (chiaroscuro). Touch Drawing teen - adult

Touch Drawing provides students of all levels with an opportunity to find an entry point to creating reflective, process-driven art. Through this contemplative practice, we will use our hands, tissue paper, and water-based oil paints to allow thoughts and sensations to flow through our hands and be externalized as images. Drawing 2: Intermediate 18 - adult

Working through the language of drawing and drawing theory, students will be encouraged to embrace new ideas and techniques while re-examining and building upon the methods and discipline of their previous drawing experience. Challenging themselves to push to new levels, they will observe, study and organize what they see. Process, exploration, and composition will be employed through the use of various drawing mediums from pencil, to ink and watercolor, and applied to subjects ranging from still life, interior views, and landscape. Painting the Figure 18 - adult

Students will work from the figure while exploring anatomical, design, and painting concepts and techniques. While interpreting the human form, we will strive to bring individual creativity, visual problem solving, and craftsmanship into accord with our artistic vision. This course is great for re-honeing skills after a long hiatus, or for those who wish to continue or begin working with the figure through oil painting. The Ageless Jazz Band teen − adult

The Ageless Jazz Band began in 1990 as a CSMA class for musicians looking for an opportunity to play big band swing music, and was originally directed by George Carvel. Having evolved beyond a class experience, the AJB is now a year-round performing ensemble, featured at local and regional festivals and special events, and is currently directed by Nick Pauldine. Volunteer membership is by invitation, following an informal "audition" process, and rehearsals are open for observation by CSMA members and students. Accomplished CSMA students are encouraged to participate in rehearsals as available space allows.
