Belly Dancing 13 − adult

Learn the fundamentals of this beautiful, expressive dance form. Belly Dance is a joyful, low-impact activity that will improve your posture, balance, strength, grace and body awareness - no matter what age or shape you are! With inspiration provided by a wide range of Middle Eastern music, rhythms, and instrumentation, students will practice basic movements of the hips, torso, arms, and head, which will then be combined into more complex techniques and simple choreography with traveling steps and turns.  Those students who wish to further develop their skills for performance can consider joining our CSMA-affiliated troupe, Mirage Belly Dancers of Ithaca. Per class drop-in rate: members: $11 non-members: $15 Clothing: Students can be barefoot or wear flexible dance shoes/sandals. Beginners should preferably wear pants or tights instead of skirts; this will make it easier for the teacher to give feedback on technique. Each student should acquire a hip wrap of some kind; a simple scarf or a coin belt.  The teacher will have some inexpensive coin hip scarves available for sale.

Intro to Modern Dance Techniques: Master Class Workshop Session 3 with Janice Kovar teen - adult

5/13 – Janice Kovar: In this class, participants are encouraged to indulge in the invigorating experience of dancing and the luscious sensation of movement. To awaken the body, the class begins with a careful warm-up inspired by Gabrielle Roth's 5Rhythms.  Additional warm-up, drawn from the Cunningham aesthetic, includes exercises for the body supported by proper alignment and placement.   As the energy builds, incorporating leaps, turns, jumps, falls, detailed gestures, playful rhythms, and diverse dynamics, the class culminates in full-bodied combinations that charge through the space. Some prior dance training recommended.

Intro to Modern Dance Techniques: Master Class Workshop Session 5 with Lindsay Gilmour teen - adult

6/3 – Lindsay Gilmour: In this class we will work with finding flow, momentum, and gravity. Understanding the dynamics of a movement helps students develop sensitivity to time, space, and the energetic quality of movement, allowing a sense of freedom and encouraging them to experience and embody movement beyond the “correct steps.” Through set combination and improvisation we will work on breath, core support, initiation and sequencing, spatial awareness, effort and intent. I encourage students to build their technique and with it to “let go and fly,” experiencing movement kinesthetically rather than by rote imitation. We work to be in dialogue with our bodies, developing kinesthetic intelligence, opening to the wisdom of the body moving. Every dancer is unique and I encourage students to be genuinely curious about themselves and about the form. I hope to facilitate each dancer’s personal growth, encouraging students to work to their edge and open to their own full potential as movers, artists, and people.

6/17 – Karen Koyanagi: I'll be teaching a beginner/intermediate modern dance class, with Graham and Limon influences, and incorporating some exercises from Irmgard Bartenieff in the warm-up.  I focus on the awareness of the connection between breath and movement, core initiation, and weight transfer and shifts.  My classes are quite physical, (yes, you may do push-ups or sit-ups) but I use imagery to communicate the movements and technique.  The class will end with a short combination.

Principles of Design: 2-Dimensional Design I: Dynamic Composition teen - adult

Design is the foundation of visual arts. In a design class students learn that visual art is language that can be broken down into discrete elements. These elements form the core of expression and are used together to create cohesive compositions using the Gestalt theory of design. A series of simple exercises in black and white, using a variety of media will teach students how to effectively use the elements of art to create unified compositions. This course is strongly recommended as a prerequisite to Basic Drawing or Painting. Note: 2-Dimensional Design II: Color Theory will be offered in a later term. Music

The Ageless Jazz Band teen − adult

The Ageless Jazz Band began in 1990 as a CSMA class for musicians looking for an opportunity to play big band swing music, and was originally directed by George Carvel. Having evolved beyond a class experience, the AJB is now a year-round performing ensemble, featured at local and regional festivals and special events, and is currently directed by Nick Pauldine. Volunteer membership is by invitation, following an informal "audition" process, and rehearsals are open for observation by CSMA members and students. Accomplished CSMA students are encouraged to participate in rehearsals as available space allows. The Ageless Jazz Band supports CSMA by hosting periodic fundraiser performances, promoting the school in public performances, and through annual donations. PLEASE DO NOT REGISTER FOR THIS ONLINE .... INSTEAD .... CONTACT THE OFFICE FOR INFORMATION!
